Abert, Jan Josef (1832-1915). German composer of Czech birth. Double bass player. Studied double bass at the Prague Conservatory (1848-1852), as well as having private lessons in music. Obtained a position in the Court Orchestra in Stuttgart in 1853. His development as a composer ran in parallel with his practical musical career. His works most notably included operas, symphonies, chamber music and some secular vocal music. His most successful opera Astorga was given in Czech translation in the Czech Provisional Theatre in 1876.
