Celestin Müller

Cölestin

Müller, Celestin (1826-1877). Czech oboist, composer and music teacher. Studied oboe at the Prague Conservatory 1840-1846. Founded and directed a private music institute in 1852 under the patronage of Prince Lobkovic. This was frequently known simply as ‘Müller’s Music Institute’ but the school operated under the title of the Humanitarian Musical Society [Humanistický hudební spolek] suggestive of aims to make musical tuition available to poorer classes. The institute cultivated singing and piano playing but primarily the latter. Müller himself taught pupils. He also composed piano works, exclusively salon music and didactic works, including an important tutor Praktische Piano-Schule (1854). According to Mercy’s Anzeiger 2/10/1854 a portrait of Müller was being presented by the Lithographic Institute of Franz Schir.
