Suppé, Franz von (1819-1895). Austrian conductor and composer, of Belgian descent. Full name given in parentheses. Showed an early talent for music, but initially forced to study medicine in Padua. Later settled in Vienna, establishing himself as an exceptionally effective theatre conductor. In tandem he matured as a composer and gained enormous success writing operetta. His output was not confined to this sphere and he also produced some notable church music.
