Commentary:

A brief report published by Národní listy 5/1/1862 stated that the first [Prague] performance of Josef Krejčí’s Mass in A minor was to be given by the Hlahol singing society at an evening entertainment at Žofín island, with rehearsals being held in the rooms of the Žofín Academy ‘on Monday and Friday.’ However, following this report no further information was published by Národní listy or Dalibor to suggest that this Mass was performed at a Žofín soirée. When the next Hlahol production took place at the Žofín Hall, on 16/2/1862, the programme contained no sacred choral work. The Národní listy 8/2/1862 report stated that the Mass would be performed the following day, on 9/2/1862 in Sv Jakub [St James] church.

The unsigned Dalibor 10/2/1862 review noted that Krejčí’s Mass ‘is on the whole a pleasant composition and especially excels [in] the Kyrie and Dona with spirited and skilful part writing. Less successful are the Credo and Benedictus, in the [second] of which theatre music prevails more than church music.’ The critic asserted that the overall effect of the work would have been less profound without the excellent solo singing of Jan Ludevít Lukes. Of the Hlahol choir, the review commented that their ‘Performance was excellent and, may we be permitted to say, that it is a long time since we have heard anything so perfect. The most exquisite nuances, forte and piano, crescendo and diminuendo of our Hlahol deserved unanimous approbation.’
