Commentary:

An announcement published by Dalibor 20/9/1861 stated that an entertainment in aid of the society ‘Matice’ took place on 16/9/1861. The programme details contained in this Dalibor report along with the identification of the venue bein on Štvanice Island correspond with announcements published by Čas 8/9/1861 and Národní listy 11/9/1861 of a beseda being given at that same venue at 8pm on the 11/9/1861 in aid of Matice. The likelihood is that the two periodical reports were referring to the same event, and that the Dalibor text contained an error of date. Admission to the entertainment was 60kr.

The Dalibor 20/9/1861 source related that on performing the opening number a white banner was displayed with a red lion wearing a crown [symbolic of the Bohemian nation], with below it the words ‘Sláva vlasti [Hail to the nation].’ Vociferous applause followed that number. Mr Přerhof performed various declamations. Miss Formánková ‘has a sweet voice, only [we would wish] that she pronounced the accents on some words [thus implying that her Czech pronunciation was faulty]! She... obtained substantial applause. Mr Labler could not perform as we would have wished - however that was due to the poor instrument.’
