Commentary:

Tagesbote aus Böhmen 14/10/1854 reported that ‘On Sunday St Salvator’s (Seminary) Church will be opened following restoration. The Polytechnic Institute will celebrate with a religious service on that day at 9am, in which will be given the great Mass in C by L. Beethoven under the direction of the Domcapellmeister [Kapellmeister of St Vitus Cathedral], J.N. Škroup.’ A similar report appeared in Mercy’s Anzeiger 14/10/1854 relating the same information.

The Czech-language periodical Lumír also announced this event in its supplement no.63 published on 14/10/1854. The source noted ‘The Church of St Salvator in the Seminary after refurbishment will tomorrow again be open. The Polytechnic Institute will at 9am there celebrate the adoration of the Holy Ghost, in which under the direction of Mr Jan Škroup, Kapellmeister of the Church at Prague Castle [St Vitus], Beethoven’s great Mass in C [major] be performed.’
