Commentary:

News appeared in Mercy’s Anzeiger 13/6/1854 that ‘We hear that on 17th June on Žofín Island will take place a particularly brilliant Festival.’ The text then noted that further details would be related later.

More detailed information about this entertainment was published by Der Tagesbote 14/6/1854. The source reported that on ‘Saturday 17th June finds on the Žofín Island a great festival under the title “Ein Abend in Floras Zaubergarten”, in which the garden will be festively decorated and lit. The band of the esteemed Royal Infantry Regiment of Archduke Albrecht, under the personal leadership of its zealous Kapellmeister F.J. Urschitz, will participate. If the weather is unpleasant the event will take place on Monday 19th June instead. As before, the event [taking place] will be signalled by the firing of a gun 2 hours in advance. Advance tickets at 10kr may be obtained from the Art and Music Shop of Marco Berra on Egydigasse [Jilská ulice] in the Old Town.’ No further details of the event were given by this source.

Mercy’s Anzeiger 14/6/1854 also reported the date, venue and title of the event, the participating ensemble and Kapellmeister, and that the venue would be ‘festively decorated and brilliantly lit. It is said that on the day the said ensemble will be with stringed instruments. In the case of bad weather the event will take place on Monday (19th June). The start of the Festival will be signalled with a gunshot.’ On 16/6/1854 the newspaper again reported the event, listing the programme, the participating ensemble and its director. Admission tickets could be purchased for 10kr in advance from the art and music shop of Marco Berra. On 17/6/1854 the Vergnügungsanzeiger section of the newspaper, a daily almanac of musical entertainments taking place in the city appearing in the source for the first time, noted the date (17/6/1854), venue and participating ensemble of this event.

Mercy’s Anzeiger 18/6/1854 the published news that the ‘Schemes for this year’s big music festivals in the open air seen to be under an unlucky star [i.e. seem to be fated]. Yesterday’s planned “Evening in Flora’s Magic Garden” had to be postponed until 19th June due to the highly unsuitable weather. Should also that day be unfavourable, this festival will take place on 20th June.’
The daily Vergnügungsanzeiger section of Mercy’s Anzeiger 19/6/1854 then noted date (19/6/1854), venue and participating ensemble.
