Commentary:

The fifth supplement of Lumír 1854, published on 21/3/1854 reported that ‘Concert of the violinist Mr Adolf Köckert will be on 8th April. Originally this concert was set for the second day of Easter [na druhý velkonoční svátek - i.e. Easter Monday] and on that day the hall was already spoken for, however Mr Alexander Dreyschock has willingly granted the favour of transferring his day, on which he will give a concert for the benefit of local poor.’ On 4/4/1854 Lumír reported that the ‘Interesting concert of Mr Adolf Köckert will be on 7th April’. Bohemia 12/3/1854 also originally reported that ‘The violin virtuoso Köckert gives on Easter Monday a concert.’

Advance news of this concert published by Tagesbote aus Böhmen 2/4/1854 related that the event had earlier been announced as taking place on 8th April but was now being given on Friday 7th. The reason for this change was that Miss Meyer, who would participate in the concert, would sing in the first [Prague] performance of [Kittl’s] opera Bilderstürmer on Saturday. The programme to the concert, in performance order, was published by Der Tagesbote 7/4/1854. Kittl’s new opera Bilderstürmer was actually premièred on 24/4/1854 in a festival performance, as noted Bohemia 8/4/1854, to celebrate the marriage of the Emperor Franz Joseph.

Tagesbote aus Böhmen 9/4/1854 published an unsigned review of this event. The correspondent reported that ‘Mr Köckert, former pupil of the local Conservatory, gave a concert in the Konvikt Hall the day before yesterday before a numerous audience, in which he showed all the attributes of proficient schooling and a dignified talent. Since we last heard him, Mr K. has made particular progress in purity of tone and in expressive depth, and these combined with sure and easy bowing made certain that the concert was a brilliant success.’ The works performed by Köckert were then listed, with the critic singling out for praise the violinist’s expressive playing in the Adagio of Molique’s Concerto, and his technical accomplishment in the G-string and passages using harmonics in the third variation of his own composition. Of the remainder of the concert the review related how the ‘Overture to L. Tieck’s dramatic poem „Pfalzgräfin Genovesa“ by Ambros’ was for an unknown reason replaced by Cherubini’s Overture to Medea. Finally, ‘Miss Meyer gave two songs, the first by Mendelssohn „Es weiß und rath es doch keiner“ with her characteristic ardency and charm, and
overcoming with ease the awkward [technical] difficulties in Die Elfe“ by Rietz.’ She also performed a song by Ferdinand David, O rash, mein Pferd. This constituted a change from the programme published by the earlier Tagesbote report, which listed the song by David as O schneller, mein Roß, mit Hast.
