Commentary:

This event was listed in the Tagesanzeiger texts of Bohemia 18/12/1851 and 19/12/1851 as ‘Third Concert of Mr Ferd. Laub.’ The occasion was the third of a series of three chamber music soirées taking place on consecuitive Fridays. Lumír 4/12/1851 had reported the arrangement by Laub of quartet soirées to take place on 5th, 12th and 19th December in which would participate Goltermann, Paulus and Weber. The source remarked that ‘Every lover of so-called chamber music, of whom there are many in Prague, will sincerely be grateful [that these concerts were arranged], for following the departure of our Král and Messrs Köckert [Röckert] and Träg we had little hope that any further entertainments [of this type] would take place so soon. The name of Laub, who has just gain has just returned to his homeland from London where he became a great favourite, guarantees us a rare musical treat.’ The review published by Lumír 11/12/1851 of the first soirée also reported brief programme details for the second and third events in this series.

A review, signed ‘V.’, was published by Bohemia 21/12/1851. This focussed particularly upon describing Schubert’s quartet and also commented in detail upon the quintet by Mendelssohn even though the correspondent noted that the work had been reviewed after it was first given in Prague during the previous year. The performances by Laub and his colleagues of all the works was highly praised. The Scherzo from Schubert’s work was encored, as was the Scherzo and Adagio from the quintet. Concluding, the critic emphasized the success of these chamber music entertainments, remarking upon the enthusiastic reception given to them by the public and noting that a series of further productions would take place during the forthcoming Lenten season. Laub was also said to be arranging a forthcoming concert in Prague at which he would play the ‘great Paganini Concerto with orchestral accompaniment.’

Lumír 24/12/1851 published a review of this ‘Final quartet beseda of Messrs Laub, Paulus, Weber and Goltermann. Finis coronat opus. There was no better conclusion than today. The Quartet in D minor of F. Schubert is nearer to being symphonic than chamber music, and is as endearing as all works by this lovable and characteristic composer. The performance was so accurate and precise that besides repeating the Scherzo, the Finale too had to be encored. Although Messrs Weber and Paulus in all the quartets [played] quite fittingly, the first violin and violoncello deserve particular notice. Particularly in the Quintet in B-flat major by Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Mr Laub showed himself to be an artist of the first class. Tastefulness in playing, strength in intonation, impeccable bowing is all to be admired for its perfection. His spirit penetrates completely into the most subtle details of the composer, with all profundity and delicacy.’ The players were praised for their deportment although sometimes their gestures and body movements were thought to be disturbing. The Scherzo and Adagio movements of Mendelssohn’s Quintet had to be encored. The critic noted that the audience was very numerous and hughly attentive, and expressed hope that three more such quartet entertainments could be given as soon as possible.
