Commentary:

News appeared in Bohemia 15/10/1858 announcing the occurrence of this production the following morning on the Saint’s Day of the church, St Gallas, at 11am following a sermon commencing at 10am. Performing under the direction of the composer were to be nine younger children of Škroup’s music school [Singing Institute] as well as Misses Ferles[ová], Soukup[ová] and the pianist Miss Čermák. The latter was undoubtedly the young Czech piano virtuoso Vilemína Čermáková, who along with Ferlesová and Soukupová had been a pupil of Škroup.

A report appeared in Prager Morgenpost 15/10/1858 relating similar basic details of the event, its time, and the participation of pupils of the music school of ‘Franz Skraup’ [František Škroup] although specific individuals were not noted. This report was the only source to note that an offertorium by Jos. Haydn was included in the programme.

A brief review of the event appeared in Bohemia two days later on 18 Oct 1858. The ‘felicitous’ and ‘exquisite’ performance under the ‘precise’ direction of Škroup was heightened by the contribution of the 12 pupils of Škroup’s Singing Institute. The ‘precision of the performances and the beauty of the youthful voices, amongst them Frl. Soukup and Feles, achived a noble effect.’ The apparent disparity between the nine pupils suggested by the previous Bohemia report and this later review may be accounted for by the participation of Misses Ferlesová, Soukupová and Čermáková, all recent pupils of Škroup. The Bohemia 18/10/1858 text ended with the news ‘As we hear, the above mentioned novice artists [Ferlesová and Soukupová] have already obtained very favourable petitions from Lemberg [Lviv] and Berlin.’

The brief Dalibor 21/10/1858 review of the event, signed ‘-k.’, recorded that the solo vocalists who participated in this production were Miss Albertína Ferlesová, Miss M. Soukupová, Miss Klingerová, Peták and Karel Strakatý, but neither mentioned the appearance of Čermáková nor identified more specifically the pupils of Škroup’s school taking part in the event. The review also noted only the performance of Škroup’s mass and did not list any accompanying graduale or offertorium. Of the Mass itself, which Škroup composed during the late 1830s, the Dalibor critic remarked that ‘the most beautiful parts[...] are the Et incarnatus, Kyrie and Sanctus.’ In a report unconnected with this concert review, Dalibor 21/10/1858 related news that the singers Ferlesová and Soukupová, both pupils of Škroup, were about to leave Prague to take up appointments in theatres respectively in Berlin and Lvov.
