Commentary:

Národní listy 30/1/1863 published an unsigned review of this event, reporting: ‘First Society Ball of Czech Tradesmen [řemeslník – tradesman, craftsman, skilled workman] took place on 28th [January] in the Konvikt Hall, measured up to expectation. Although the celebrated police did not allow subscription tickets there still came a great number of our youthful tradesmen, others and other guests to the aforementioned ball. The hall was simply, although tastefully, decorated in national colours. In the front of the Hall was a bust of Havlíček, wreathed in rare flowers. Above this were two great emblems of trade and industry. Between thesewas... the mottos of the tradesmen: „Spolčujme se“ [Associate together] and „Sjednocenost!“ [Unified]. Over them crowned the mark of our country – a crowned white lion in a red field. On the gallery flew a red and white flag with the inscription: „Prací k životu, životem k práci“ [Work to live, with life to work]. The entertainment was very lively and genuine, the simple and heartfelt guests continuing until daybreak.’ Thanks were offered by the correspondent to the committee who worked with great vigour to arrange the event. Specifically mentioned were: Fr. Bučínský; Tomáš Ulrich, carpenter; Karel Oliva, tailor; Josef Čelikovský, designer; Jan Burian, lathe-worker; Antonín Poch, builder; Jan Podlaha, blacksmith; Frant. Klaus, carpenter.’ No details were given of the musical content of the occasion.
