Karel Strakatý
Karl
Strakatý, Karel (1804-1868), Czech singer, studied law and philosophy in Prague before embarking upon a thirty-year career as a bass soloist in the Estates Theatre [Stavovské divadlo], 1827-1857. Strakatý gained enormous local renown as a performer and was an influential figure in Prague musical life even after his retirement; his appearance as a soloist in concert performances was invariably greeted with critical acclaim and proved a popular attraction to concert-going Prague society. From the late 1850s although suffering increasingly from ill health and appearing less frequently in musical events he still participated in a number of important public concerts and in soirées and other entertainments organized by his friends and associates.
