Ludwig Minkus

Aloisius Ludwig Alois Ludevít Léon Fedorovich

Minkus, Ludwig (1826-1917). Moravian violinist, conductor and composer. Displayed prodigious youthful talent as a violinist, and studied composition in the Vienna Conservatoire. He moved to Paris in 1846, working as a violinist and conductor, and in 1853 to Russia where among other posts he served as principal violinist of the Bolshoi Theatre and as professor of violin at the Moscow Conservatoire. The culmination of his career was the appointment as First Imperial Ballet Composer in 1871. Following his retirement in 1891 he returned to live the remainder of his life in Vienna.
