komentář:

Preliminary news of this concert appeared in the Tageskalender of Bohemia 8/5/1859, giving the title of the event and specifying the venue and time.

The programme is reproduced in performance order according to the unsigned review published by Dalibor 10/5/1859. This text simply listed the works given and then concluded with a biting criticism of the unspecified arranger of this concert for having the vocal items sung in German and Italian; ‘from the programme it was apparent [. . .] that he sees here [in Prague] more Italians than Czechs. Risum teneatis!’

A brief review of this concert appeared in the German daily newspaper Prager Zeitung 10/5/1859; longer texts were published by Prager Morgenpost 11/5/189 and Bohemia 10/5/1859. The latter noted that in the Festmarsch by Škroup the part for organ [which introduced in the Trio section the theme of the Volkshymne Heil dir in Siegeskranz] was performed on a physharmonica. Although none of the sources covering this event identified the participating ensemble there can be little doubt that this was the orchestra of the Estates Theatre, even though the specified director František Škroup had since 1857 no longer been the director of that body. The Conservatory Orchestra did not presumably participate, given that it had performed a substantial concert on the previous day.
