Commentary:

Mercy’s Anzeiger 26/2/1857 reported that the annual series of ‘Musical Garlands’ that usually took place in the Konvikt Hall during lent would again be given this year. ‘For these have been gained [the services of] the laudably well-known Orchestra of Mr Komsak [Komzák].’ The first of the series would take place on 1st March, and would be entitled ‘A Ball in Sounds [Ein Ball in Tönen]’. No further details were given by this source.

A substantial advertisement for this event was published in
Mercy’s Anzeiger 26/2/1857, and repeated on 27th, 28/2/1857 and 1/3/1857:

‘Konvikt Hall.
Sunday 1st March 1857
the
1. Musical garland [1. musikalische Kränzchen],
as well as
Carnival-Echo
under the title:
A Ball in Sounds
consisting of
Orchestral and Solo performances
alternating with
Quartets for Natural Horns,
an which the
large
mainly of concert-players comprised
Orchestra
of the newly organized Sharpshooters-Ensemble under the personal direction
of its first Kapellmeister Mr
K. Komsak
will participate.’

The text then reported that subscription tickets to all six events in this lenten series cost 40kr, or to each individual event 10kr, and could be obtained from the music shop of Robert Veit. The event commenced at 7pm and ended at 12 o’clock. Admission on the evening at the box office was 12kr. The Vergnügungsanzeiger of Mercy’s Anzeiger 1/3/1857 reported ‘Today Sunday... Konvikt Hall: Garland.’

A brief review of this event was published by Mercy’s Anzeiger 5/3/1857. The correspondent related that ‘The first Musical Garland given on 1st March in the Konvikt Hall was very numerously attended, and the excellent performances of the large orchestra under the splendid direction of Kapelleister Mr Komsak [Komzák] received vociferous applause. In particular we have to mention too the virtuoso performances of individual orchestra members, as well as... the [excellent] choice of programme offering and entertaining diversity.’
