Commentary:

Prager Zeitung 17/3/1850 published a report, signed ‘Const. Bl.’, describing the events of the funeral of the Slovak painter and patriot Belani. The event, noted the report ‘had a peculiar, we might say Romantic imprint. At 6 o’clock in the evening there gathered an unusually numerous assembly of all classes and ages in the courtyard of the general hospital, and [there] the elegant coffin adorned with a book and a wreath was laid down. Messrs Strakatý, Jaroš, Böhm and Erner sang a beautiful Quartet by Skraup [Škroup], the Pastor of the Czech protestant community gave a moving sermon in Czech, and a well-executed Salve Regina followed. At twilight the funeral cortege began to move. Eight Slovak ‘Drahtbinder’ in national apparel took the coffin through gas-lit streets. Twelve students in Slavic hats and white sashes trudged alongside. ...’ Further description of the proceedings followed, after which the text gave details of the painter’s life, specifically in the period including and after 1848.

The composition by Skraup [Škroup] cannot be identified. No appropriate funeral chorus can be identified in the output of František Jan Škroup, and the work was more probably of his brother Jan Nepomuk who composed a substantial body of church music.
